When looking at tractors for sale, you will hear a lot of terms for the different features available. It is a good idea to talk with a professional about both standard and optional features for any models you are considering so that you can make an informed decision that is right for your particular use.
Standard and Built-In Features:
Tires: Most compact tractors have an R1 agricultural bar tread with the familiar raised diagonal bar design. It is made to get good traction in dirt, sand, and mud. Some models have an R4 tread, which has a wider space in between the bars, and the bars are not as highly raised, meaning it will not dig as deep into the soil as the R1.
Engine: A diesel engine is much more powerful than typical gas engines. They are designed to generate a lot of torque, which is a measure of the turning power rather than speed. The engines are designed to last a long time if properly maintained.
Drawbar: The drawbar is a hitch that connects to the tractor’s frame and is used to pull another piece of equipment behind it, such as a cart or wagon.
Transmission: Just as an automobile has a transmission, so does a tractor. While automatic transmission models are available, most are manual shifting.
Power steering: While you may find a used model for sale that does not have power steering, most tractors for sale today have the same smooth steering that is available in your car. Unless you are going to be using the equipment in an area without many turns or twists, you will want to make sure yours has this feature.
Three-point hitch: This is a triangle-shaped hydraulic system that allows you to hook up attachments, such as a bush-hog or plow. The two side arms pull and lift the attachment while the top (center) arm controls the angle. The hitch lifts your attachment off the ground as needed.
Additional Options
Four wheel drive: A tractor is rear-axle driven. If you opt for a four-wheel drive model, you can engage the front axle when needed, such as in the mud or on steep, rough terrain. This option will cost more, but is worth it for some settings.
Front end loader: This is a huge bucket that connects to the equipment’s front end. It can help with easily moving hay, manure, branches, and much more.
Hydrostatic transmission: With this option, you can change gears without having to manually adjust them. This is not the same as having an automatic transmission, but it does make the shifting between gears easier, as there is no clutch.
Some other helpful additions that will make certain jobs easier include:
Mower: Available in many different widths, this attachment connects to the back of your equipment, and it allows you to clear weeds and mow pasture grass.
Posthole digger: If you have a lot of fencing around your property, this attachment will come in handy. It is also helpful if you will be doing some construction or planting of large trees.
Snow blower: If you are in an area prone to heavy snows, this will work with your front-end loader to more easily clear a path.
